What is an Esthetician?

There are still some people out there that have never heard of an Esthetician or don't know exactly what they do. Even some that know about Estheticians may not know enough to share the information with others! Well we are going to break it down for you right here!

First let's break down the word Esthetician (sometimes seen as Aesthetician). Esthetician can be broken down into esthetic- and -ian the word 'esthetic' is defined as "relating to pure beauty rather than to other considerations" and 'ian' is "a person who specializes or is expert in". An Esthetician in simple term is someone who specializes in pure beauty especially relating to the skin, or the dictionary definition is "a person trained to administer facials, advise customers on makeup and the care of skin". Call them your skin care specialist and advisor!!

So what makes them qualified?

Well obviously they must have an education relating to skin. There are many different schools available where one can learn about skin, but a specialized school would be a preferred area of teaching. For example you can learn esthetics at a community college and there may be some great instructors, but the focus can be diminished since there are requirements outside of the esthetics program that must be adhered to; Math, English, etc. An Esthetics school focuses solely on teaching the student about the anatomy, with an emphasis on the skin. Yes, they must learn about the entire anatomy, without knowing the entire anatomy it is likely that they could cause damage to a part of the body that they are not familiar with. During school; they not only study a text that teaches them anatomy, functions of the skin as well as safety and sanitation; but they are also required to perform a specific number of services under direct supervision of an instructor prior to final testing and receiving a Certificate of Esthetics.

Once they have received a Certificate of Esthetics, they must then pass a rigorous and somewhat stressful state board exam, under the very watchful eye of an examiner. The test is not only a written exam but is also a practical exam, where the student must perform certain services while a state board examiner oversees and grades. The grading is based more on the procedures and precautions taken to ensure the health and safety of a client rather than the quality of the service. Once the state board is passed the student is then a licensed Esthetician.

This is when the real challenge begins!! How do they earn the trust of clients in order to build a clientele? Provide quality services at affordable prices and with the main concern of the Esthetician being the skin of the client and not the size of the paycheck.

We recommend that you do your research in order to find the highest quality of service, not just the best price or first available appointment. As with any profession the business that cares most about the clients will provide the best possible information, at the earliest possible time and be receptive to clients' true concerns. It is up to each individual client to decide what is most important, but one should not always assume that the highest price will always yield the highest quality. In fact the opposite may actually be true when considering all factors in the skincare industry. If an Esthetician truly cares about people and their skin's health, they are not necessarily going to charge an inordinate amount of money to provide a service of their time. Most procedures are a charge of the Estheticians time and not only of products or the actual service. Most importantly an Esthetician is someone who is willing to listen to your concerns about your skin and help to guide you in the best possible direction to achieve results toward more beautiful and healthy skin. Great Estheticians view the opportunity to help people with their skin as part of the reward for what they do! Find an Esthetician that cares about you and your skin, and not just your check book.
